A Rather Nasty Virus
Today my wife told me about a very nasty trojan going around. It gets spread via IM from a zip file. Funny to me that after all we have learned over the years people still will open zip files and run the attachment. My users here seem to be getting more advanced and just delete suspicious emails instead of opening them at least and most don’t use IM often.
A few years back I had a user call me and tell me they could not open an attachment. They said the anti-virus software would not let it open. I asked what the attachment was supposed to be. They said they did not know because it came from someone they never heard of before. Wow! I was shocked. For several years after that I just blocked all zip files from our mail server. Generally we have 2 tier protection for the nasty stuff out there but we still have to protect users from themselves. No matter how many locks you put on the door at your house, if you open the door for an intruder they will get in.

Yea and I have won over a gazillion dollars in foreign lotteries this year but I’m so rich I don’t even bother to open the emails.

My wife’s employer used to categorically block zip and and some other file extensions; this despite the fact there were valid reasons to receive such files.
We developed a work around where .zip files became .piz files, etc.
An effective solution to the matter.
