Server Restore

Server Restore

Almost a week ago we had a major failure of our Email server/file share server. We got it back up after a couple of days and were able to restore it mostly. The files we did not restore were on a tape backup, or at least I hoped they were there. We have been doing backups for years at work and never had to do restores on this scale. You can hope and assume not only has your backup been working, that you backed up everything you need, and the data is good. Until you actually do the restore you never know for sure. Thanks to a merciful God we were able to restore what we need. Even better the tape drive I had to talk my old boss into buying did better than I could have ever expected. I was restoring huge chunks of files in a very short time. This is the best and worst part of a job like mine. I still have a few little things to do but compared to where we were, we are way ahead of the game.

On a side note the other person is my ‘Obi Wan’, Bill. He is our consultant on things like this. He helped make this a 2 day job rather than multiple days. Bill and I moved the image of our old server to a new server saving vast amounts of bit by bit restoring. You’ll notice that Bill is basically the same height as me and he is sitting down! I’m not short, Bill is 6′ 8″, but don’t ask him “how’s the weather up there”. I happen to know he doesn’t like that.

Thanks for everything Bill!

Barry, I liked the humor in that cartoon. Great that your recovery efforts succeeded.

  2. Bill says:

Thanks for the “Obi Wan” Barry. I’m not sure I can live up to that status though. I’m glad we were able to get you back up and running. I always enjoy working with you and the work you’ve put into the systems there helped us a lot in the recovery process. Not to mention the Cheeze-It’s and Peanuts. ;-)

As for the “Weather” comment, I’ve gotten used to it over the years, along with the “Do you play basketball?” question. I once met a guy who was 6’11″ and he had a great T-shirt. All it said was, “No, do you play miniature golf?” ;-)
